Hi! Hello... this blog technically still exists!! I haven't written in a while because my choice of book genre moulded into one which only a handful of people will be interested in. However, I have read some throughout that can still be talked about. ALSO, I was talking to a dear friend who asked me how this blog was going... which reminded me that I could start it up again for a little while.
I actually read this back in June 2020. It was gifted to me by my lovely "step-auntie" as the author is a friend of hers. I am excited to have a connection to an author of a book that I really enjoyed.
'Blood & Sugar' travels back to the late 1700s where the slave trade is still a thriving industry. At the docks in London, a body hangs on a hook branded with an unrecognisable mark.
The mystery of it all ends up in the lap of a war hero Captain Henry Corsham when he is informed that a formerly very close friend is now missing. Against many people's advice Henry accepts the challenge and makes it his duty to find his friend. His friend, named Tad Archer, is a vehement abolitionist that had begun to unravel a conspiracy that would have a deep impact on some very powerful people.
This mystery not only includes the usual suspense that comes with solving a murder, but also involves the local politics and explores how a certain type power exists when one has money to spare.
The Captain finds himself making personal decision that affects his own future, whilst also unknowingly one that has the chance to change hundreds of lives.
I found this a quick and easy read, but also extremely stimulating. I loved reading about the undercover networks that exist and found myself disgusted at the lengths people would go to to cover things up. I also read this at the time where the BLM Protests were at their peak demonstrating that racism is still a very big problem. It was refreshing to read about someone who fought their social norms by trying to find a way to end the slave trade.
I highly recommend this to anyone who finds themselves in a bit of a slump or wants a different type of murder mystery.
I hope people take my advice and give this a go!!
Love,
H

P.S
I have just realised that it is a Wednesday so I truly am keeping with the tradition. I'll have another up next week... I think!
